Winter in Como Park

Most locals are familiar with the many things Como Park has to offer during warmer months. From the miles of walking paths and outdoor eateries to the Como Park Zoo, it’s easy to think of things to do on a sunny summer day in the neighborhood. When winter hits, it can be tempting to lock ourselves away at home and overlook all the great activities that deserve our attention.

Here’s a brief primer on some of what you may have missed in winters past – don’t miss out this year! Get out and enjoy this winter in Como Park!

St. Paul Winter Carnival

Every year, the Winter Carnival descends upon St. Paul, and while events occur far and wide, some of them land at Como Park. This year, catch the Disc Golf Ice Bowl and Ultimate Hat Tournament at the intersection of Horton and Como. Events take place on Saturday and Sunday, Jan 28-29.

Snow Park at the Fair

If you choose to venture to the western edge of the neighborhood, many more events can be found at the State Fairgrounds, including the Snow Park at the Fair. This diverse array of snowy exhibits, competitions, and activities will be open from Friday, January 27 through Sunday, February 5.


Recreation Centers

The Como Park neighborhood has two public recreation centers, offering programming and activities year-round. Both the Northwest Como Recreation Center and the North Dale Recreation Center offer ice skating, open gym, youth classes and programming, and after school activities. In addition, the North Dale location has a full fitness center, and low-cost memberships are available to those who live or work in St. Paul.

Como Park Ski Center

The Como Park Ski Center offers snowboarding and skiing over 15 acres, with a 150’ vertical drop for downhill aficionados and more than 5K of trails groomed for cross country use. Lessons and equipment rentals are available, and the on-site chalet provides concessions and rest rooms. The Ski Center can be found at 1431 North Lexington Parkway, near Lake Como and the Como Park Zoo and Conservatory.

If the winter begins to take its toll and you’ve decided it’s time for some tropical warmth, the Como Park neighborhood has that, too! The Marjorie McNeely Conservatory at Como Park provides an escape from the snow during these cold winter months. Several gardens are in full green year-round, and the Tropical Encounters exhibit merges the plant and animal worlds to create an immersive neo-tropical rainforest experience. There’s no better – or closer – place to go to surround yourself with green and recharge.

In 2013, Katy completed the Tough Mudder 10 mile event and is a proud member of the “Finishers” group! For fun, Katy loves reading, photography and gardening and spending time with her family.
